Why You Need A No-nonsense Shopping List!

Always be prepared with a list when shopping‘Whoever said money can’t buy happiness obviously didn’t know where to go shopping!’ Shopping is a woman’s favorite sport. It’s almost like rugby- women enjoy the scuffle, the contest, the crazy crowds, the danger of being caught in a stampede of hysterical women, and finally- the sense of pure satisfaction and utmost joy when they finally land at the billing counter with their prized possessions! There’s nothing more exhilarating, exciting, and quite frankly cleansing, than picking up a bag and a credit card, and hitting the stores… with intention to splurge!

Though we lucky ladies love to shop, more often than not we feel like crap when the bill is added up, unless we’re looking to take revenge on an inattentive husband! What usually leads to over-spending on shopping trips is the assumption that if we don’t get it right now it may not be there in future. Now that is completely misguided. You do not need to purchase a yellow sundress in winter, just ‘because it outlined your waist perfectly! Come spring, you’re definite to find the same outfit in more colors and better styles. Another reason is falling prey to the deceptively worded and wonderfully inviting promotional offers and sales pitched advertised around the shop. Why even last week, I bought a triple pack of great-smelling, instantly effective carpet cleaner, and my home floor isn’t even carpeted!

Control the shopoholic in you by carrying a listIt is these little bouts of extravagancy that lead women to often self-impose a shopping ban on themselves, leading to a disastrous down-slide in her mood and a consequently dangerous effect on her family. We are all shopaholics, so let’s not even try to get sober. What one must do is resort to this ingenious and quite in-complex idea of making a list. Be it shopping for grocery, gifts or even gardening equipment, writing down what is essential to our purchase helps stay focused, positive and firm on our wallet. There are umpteen grocery lists available on the internet to help you methodically shop for your monthly provisions without forgetting important stuff. But do not forget that pruning the list is vital, so you don’t end up buying half the shop in one go! Let me reiterate- you do not need carpet cleaner without a carpet (note to self)!

Choosing apparel when shoppingEven when you’re shopping for clothes, follow Tim Gunn’s rule- make a list of wardrobe essentials, be it just jeans, formal tops or an evening dress. Frankly it is a fabulous idea to write down what kind of outfit you want to buy, so you can go straight to that section, try on a few, buy what’s perfect and be completely content with your purchase! With our apparent passion for apparel, it is a regular scenario to go into a store and get lost in the beautiful, vibrant fabrics and dreams of delicate dresses that aren’t even our size. In a few hours we either end up loaded with tops we don’t need, depressed that we don’t fit into anything cute, or back again with our favorite kind of outfit that is already bursting through our closet! In my case, I have a crazy penchant for black tops- and every time I go shopping for a white skirt or cream pants to go with them, I just end up back home with more black tees and blouses! This is where a shopping list helps- kind of works like those blinders they put on the side of a horse’s eyes to help is stay on a straight path!

Coconut-Lime Chicken Lettuce Wrap

Coconut-Lime Chicken Lettuce WrapThe weekend proved to be very satisfying in terms of good food. Another day without too much on the schedule allowed me some time to try out a new clean eating recipe that I put my own twist on.

This Coconut-Lime Chicken Lettuce wrap was absolutely delicious. I am nearly giddy to have the chance to share the recipe with you. At first, I wasn’t sure that a “lettuce wrap” could actually be considered a filling meal, but hunger pains avoided me for hours following this healthy twist to a traditional chicken wrap.

Modern medicine confirms that a diet rich in coconut can provide a person with a wide range of health benefits. A few benefits of coconut that are especially beneficial to women are:

  • Protects against osteoporosis
  • Boosts energy and endurance, especially beneficial for both menopausal and perimenopausal women.
  • Increases the metabolic rate making it easier to shed pounds or maintain your current weight.
  • Promotes healthy looking hair and complexion which can become thin (hair) and dull (complexion) as we age.

The recipe for this Coconut-Lime Chicken Lettuce wrap uses regular flour and extra-virgin olive oil, but to increase the health benefits of the recipe you can substitute with coconut flour and oil. This serves one, but you can increase the amount of the ingredients and bake up an extra large batch to refrigerate for easy, on-the-go meals for the rest of the week.

Hope you enjoy!

Coconut-Lime Chicken Lettuce Wrap

Ingredients

1 small chicken breast, cubed
4 sweet grape tomatoes, halved
1 large, romaine lettuce leaf
1-2 tbsp shredded coconut
1 – 2 tbsp olive oil
Juice of 1/2 of a lime
flour (to coat)

Assembly

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with 1 tbsp of olive oil. You may need to add more as the chicken cooks to avoid scorching the chicken.

Toss the cubed chicken and coconut in enough flour to lightly coat. Transfer the chicken/coconut mixture to the skillet. Cook approximately 4 minutes on each side until chicken is not longer pink.

Add the lime juice on top of the chicken while still in the skillet. Cook for another 2 minutes.

Remove chicken from skillet and let cool slightly while you prepare the lettuce and tomatoes. Top the romaine leaf with the chicken and halved grape tomato slices.

I used a couple torn iceberg lettuce leaves for an extra crunch, but stick with romaine for the nutritional benefits of your leafy greens.

Peach and Rosemary Pork Burgers

Recipe for peach and rosemary pork burgers

Are you looking for a fresh summertime meal? Have you spent so much time grilling hamburgers and hot dogs that you are welcoming the change of season just so you can eat something that doesn’t have grill marks? Well, the recipe I want to share with you today still has grill marks. It is hard to avoid when the weather is too warm to cook indoors without heating up the entire house and causing your energy bill to soar. However, this recipe is a refreshing twist on the common pork burger.

Ground pork is a power food. It contains high amounts of thiamin which is essential in aiding our body in the repair and growth of muscle tissue. This is especially important as we age because our muscles tend to grow weaker. Our muscles support our bones and when we lose that support that is when women tend to find themselves experiencing crippling conditions like osteoporosis.

This recipe for Peach and Rosemary Pork Burgers is easy. With only five ingredients and about five minutes to assemble, you will not be going through the drive-thru tonight.

Peach and Rosemary Pork Burgers

What do you need? Let’s look at those ingredients.

  • 1 lb lean ground pork
  • 1 small peach, firm so it is easier to grate
  • 2 tbsp. chopped rosemary
  • 1 tbsp. dried ginger (or fresh if available)
  • 3 gloves garlic, chopped

Mix all the ingredients together and form four pork patties. On a pre-heated grill, sear each side.  I use a charcoal grill. So, after searing the patties, I move them off to the side to avoid any grease-fueled flames from scorching them. Close the lid and let cook on one side for about 7 minutes. Then open the lid, flip and repeat for another 7 minutes.

The patties are done when their internal temperature reaches 160 degrees and are no longer pink in the center.

Serve this meal with a fresh cucumber, tomato and green pepper salad. Garnish the patties with red onion, a slice of peach and an extra pinch of rosemary for a pretty dish and serve the patty on a wholegrain bun for added nutritional benefits.

This is the perfect summer dish to liven up your typical hamburger and hot dog grilled meal.

Are Women Lazier than Men?

Are women lazier than menAs I wrote the title of this article, I rolled my eyes twice and choked back a slightly disgusted and unattractive snort at least once, but it could have been twice. Maybe I am just too lazy to remember. Either way, these were strong reactions for a task that took less than 5 seconds to complete.

Why am I even asking this question? Well, just recently findings from a global study have been trotting around the internet making grand statements, claiming that after scientifically researching both genders from a field of study participants considered to be inactive, women were found to be less active than the men. In fairness, I have to explain that both genders in this study admitted to being habitually inactive. Meaning? Meaning that out of 5 days each group professed to doing less than 30 minutes of moderate activity each day.

The purpose of this study was not to enable men to have scientific data to spout off when they are lounging on the sofa, watching a game and stuffing their bodies with whatever processed meat they can find. No, the purpose of this study was to provide current data to assist policymakers in developing disease prevention programs throughout the world. This same study also found that one of the reasons men are considered to be more active than women, is that overall, across all age ranges, men participate in more vigorous physical activities on a regular basis than women.

Of course, they have time for a game of basketball with their buddies when women are busy working and still completing more household chores than men. This is supported by a study, too. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, found that working women still engaged in more household chores than their male counterparts. Women spent 2.6 hours a day on household chores, compared to men at 2.1 hours.

In all honestly, as I write this article, I have to admit that my husband does not slack off at home. He simply has a different way of tackling chores. His way includes more downtime ( Do a load of laundry, watch a show. Do another load of laundry, watch another show. Mow half the lawn, come inside and lay on the air conditioner and repeat). I think you get the point.

This study will provide helpful data for tackling disease and maladies related to inactive lifestyles, but take-aways from the study certainly aided in interesting tongue-in-cheek web articles that poked fun at the age old debate between men and women. As far as if women are lazier than men? Well, my own experiences do not support this data. After years of bickering over household responsibilities, I think it just comes down to that men and women tackle chores differently. While I laugh and scoff at the idea that women are lazier than men, I certainly don’t believe all men are lazy bums. In fact, ask my husband why he does dishes and mops the floor. He will be happy to tell you the honest reason. I hate it and I am the laziest dishwasher and incompetent mopper. My point? I suppose we are all lazy in our own little ways.

Women in their 50′s Enjoy Sexual Freedom

Enjoying life in your fiftiesTeenagers and young adults are often warned about the dangers of unprotected, casual sex, but the dangers of unprotected sex are not strictly calamities of the young and reckless. Instances of sexually transmitted diseases in postmenopausal women are urging women to take control of their newfound sexual freedom to avoid the unpleasant and dangerous side-effects of STDs.

It is an antiquated myth that once women reach the age of 50 they dry up and wither, devoid of sexual feelings or desires. While a decrease in libido is common in menopausal women, once women move out of menopause and make that transition into the postmenopausal years sexual intimacy can be stronger than ever as hormones begin to balance and a new-found sexual freedom emerges.

Sexual freedom doesn’t mean that women are engaging in reckless sexual activity, but no longer fearful of an unplanned pregnancy and a kid-free house opens up more opportunities to get caught up in the moment. However, getting lost in an intimate moment can still lead to other situations that have long-lasting, debilitating symptoms.

Over the past few years, physicians have observed an increase in sexually transmitted diseases in patients over the age of 50. Cases of genital herpes, gonorrhea and syphilis are showing up in this demographic of sexually active adults. Reasons for the increase have been attributed to the following:

  • The primary reason is that the older generation, thanks in part to the erectile dysfunction medications on the market, are having sex more frequently and with more partners.
  • Because getting pregnant is no longer an issue, men and women engaging in sexual activity do not often consider the need to buy condoms for pregnancy protection.
  • Although we would like to think we become more self-assured as we get older, embarrassment is still a component in the decision sexually active adults make to not purchase condoms. This embarrassment is not limited to the condom aisle. Older adults sometimes still feel prudish asking their physician to test them for STDs, but lack of knowledge about one’s own medical status is damaging and contributes to the rise in sexually transmitted diseases.

If you are a postmenopausal woman engaging in sexual activity, a candid conversation with your partner about their sexual history and sexual health is essential. Being honest about your own history is a must, too. Ignoring your partner’s sexual history is not an option. An open dialogue will keep fears at bay, making your intimate moments more enjoyable.

STDs in older adults have the potential to cause more serious medical complications than in young adults. Compromised immune systems, age-related pre-existing medical conditions and prescribed medications can create a perfect storm for STDs to erupt at a faster rate in your body than in someone in their 20’s.

An open dialogue with your sexual partner, as well as with your physician, will allow you to have a robust and healthy sex life without the complications that come from sexually transmitted diseases. Taking your health seriously will allow you to have fun and relax in your new body!

10 Things Every Woman Should Know

Important things women should learnWomen are no longer damsels in distress. So, why ignore certain aspects of your life? Women make their own money, lead independent lives and make choices everyday to support their lifestyles and well-being. However, especially women in relationships, sometimes feel there are certain aspects of their life that they don’t need to be in control of. Unfortunately, some of these situations are crucial for women to be more knowledgeable amount. Here are 10 things every woman, single or not, should know how to do.

Change a tire

There is nothing more frightening than to feel stranded. Picking up the phone and calling for help, whether it be from roadside assistance or a spouse, is perfectly fine. But sometimes the only help you may have is to help yourself. Changing a tire can seem impossible, but it is actually quite simple and empowering.

Car Maintenance

Knowing the mechanics of your car like adding fluids, installing a car battery and jumping a car are not secrets only car mechanics know. Learning how to perform minor maintenance on your car will save you time and money.

Read a Map

Yes, we live in a GPS world. But how many of you have been led to a dead-end by a faulty GPS. Reading a map is a lost art. Being lost can be frightening, but if you can read a map you will always be in control of your surroundings.

Finances

In a relationship, it seems that there is always one person who is in charge of the finances. If that responsibility does not fall to you, it is vital that you include yourself in money making decisions. If something were to happen to your spouse it is essential that you know how much money is coming in and where it goes when it leaves your bank account.

Track your Policies

This is the same as your daily household finances. Any policies you have such as life, homeowner or automobile insurance, you need to know the specifics of these policies. What is your deductible? How much am I insured for? The more you know the more in control of your life situation you will be.

Taxes

No need to take a two-year tax certification course. Maybe your spouse takes care of this aspect or even an accountant. You don’t have to take over, but you should take an active interest in what you are paying. Online programs make this simple and quick. If you work with an accountant, schedule extra time so he or she can explain your deductions, taxes owed and any refunds you are getting.

Self-Defense

A feeling of safety and security is essential. Enrolling in a basic self-defense class will give you the confidence you need in case you ever find yourself in a threatening situation. Self-defense classes can usually be found in every community and are reasonably priced. These classes teach you to rely on your own strength and less on old-fashioned self-defense tactics like pepper spray, which can backfire and put you in more danger.

Change a Light Bulb

I am not being condescending. I promise. Sometimes we forget to learn the simplest things. This leads me to my next thing to know.

Household Maintenance

There is nothing wrong with hiring someone to fix something for you. Sometimes you cannot fix a problem yourself. But paying someone $75 for a service call on your air conditioner to find out that a dirty filter is the problem can be a hard check to write. Learning to perform simple home fixes like changing an air conditioner filter, knowing where to turn off the water in case there is a leak or fixing a tripped circuit will save you money.

How to Drive a Manual (aka: stick shift)

I have to admit that I do not know how to do this. I never thought it was important, but there are still cars that do not have automatic transmission. There is nothing wrong with learning how to drive a manual. You never know when you may need this lost driving talent.

Spend And Save, With Magic Coupons!

Spending less just by using coupons when shoppingHow often do you feel like your piggy bank has officially started eating up your money? Does it seem like most of your earnings practically vanish into thin air? Do you have an ‘I-must-save’ albatross hanging around your neck every time you go shopping? Well, fear not girls! There is a perfect solution to all your worries- ‘Coupons’! These little pieces of paper are quite literally magic tickets that get you discounts, free services, exchange offers and many many other great deals. All you need to do is collect, and cash in! Now you can find these valuable tokens practically everywhere, if you know where to look! Try the classifieds and ad columns in your morning paper, carefully scrutinize brochures and pamphlets left at your doorstep, browse through the booklets at the billing counter or skim through the spam in your junk folder; and you are sure to hit jackpot!

Start by collecting as many coupons as you can. This information and resource gathering stage is critical for success. Even if it seems you don’t need a massage chair right now, do not throw out the offer slip. You never know when someone in the family is going to want one, or maybe your mother-in-law’s birthday will come along and a chair will be the perfect gift! Use your coupon stack wisely. It is a smart idea to make monthly or bi-monthly shopping trips to buy household necessities, stock up on provisions etc. Once you make the plan, go through your coupons and pick out all the best ones you can use to win you the best deals! But keep in mind, your satisfaction with the product you are buying is more important than cashing in on a coupon with it!

Another important factor is organizing your coupons well. Albert Einstein once said “Being organized finds simplicity in clutter, harmony in discord and opportunity in difficulty”! Do not just throw all the coupons you get into a plastic bag, as you will never find it when you need it. Be it in a shoe box or a plastic folder; arrange all your coupons in a manner that allows ease in locating the relevant coupons at the right time. We women can never say ‘no’ when it comes to great deals. So you may end up having coupons for everything ranging from dog-walkers to ice-makers! In our perennial hurry, we will never be able to find the appropriate chits when we go shopping, unless it is classified based on the kind of item. Also, most coupons have an expiry date on them, so be sure to arrange them from soon-to-expire to long-way-to-go!

The industry today is filled with a wide variety of smart deals. It started with the initial ‘cut-out coupons’, moved to online printable coupons; and now there are electronic coupons. Larger stores even give digitalized cards to their customers with a weekly and monthly offers programmed into them. All you need to do is swipe in the card and type the code based on the discounts you want to avail. With all these wonderful new alleys open to us, I’m sure shopping will take on a new meaning! Be smart and sensible and use couponing to your advantage!

Outrun Menopause Symptoms by Increasing Your Cardio Activity

relieving menopause with runningDo you wish you could outrun menopause? Maybe you can. Women who are physically active tend to have a less severe menopausal symptoms during their body’s transition into the postmenopausal years. If you are on the verge of menopause, including running as a cardio and social activity into your lifestyle could be the answer.

Run a Marathon

Okay, I admit that most of you reading this are rolling your eyes at me and considering clicking away from this article. But, I beg you to hear me out. Running a marathon can seem to be as much fun as having an ice pick stuck up your nose, but it really isn’t all that bad.

Full disclosure. I have never ran a marathon and even though I am writing this article telling you to run a marathon, I am not sure that I ever will. However, I have ran half-marathons (because as the stick says, I run 13.1 miles because I am only half crazy) and numerous lesser races from 5ks – 10ks.

Running is a sport that is accessible to all. It requires little cost aside from some decent shoes to prevent injury and sensible clothes to avoid uncomfortable chafing. You can run in any weather, inside or outside. You do not need a gym membership. You can be a lone runner or join a running club. The choices are all up to you.

Okay, so maybe to outrun your hot flashes or other menopausal symptoms you don’t need to run 26.1. But I do want to challenge you to try to include some form of this cardio into your week – just 3 times a week and you will start to feel the changes inside and see results on the outside. Remember that other menopause symptom, weight gain? Yep! Running can help with that, too.

Beginner Runners

A beginner runner can be someone who has never even ran to the mailbox for a  package or women who may have ran off and on here and there, but haven’t ran seriously in quite a long time. If running is going to be enjoyable to you, you will need to ease into it. Unless of course you’re that person who will ultimately love it from the very beginning. If you are that person, you make me sick. Of course, I am joking. Well, kind of.

Start out with a run/walk method. 30 seconds walking then 30 seconds running. Do this run/walk interval for 30 minutes, 3 times a week for the first week. The next week increase the amount of running to a 45 second walk/run ration. Gradually, you will include more running time. Aim for about 8 weeks into this beginning program to be running 3 minutes/ walking 1 minute.

You Can Do It!

Yes, you can. I know right now it may seem impossible, but our bodies are fantastic machines that are built to withstand and overcome obstacles. Cardio is essential to keep your heart healthy, your weight maintained and your blood sugar stable. Relieving menopause symptoms is just another added benefit. So, what are you waiting for? Grab some rockin’ tune, lace up your shoes and just go for it. You can do it! See you at the finish line.

Do you run to keep menopause symptoms at bay? Did you set a marathon, half-marathon or race distance goal when you reached at certain age?

Health Care Costs Main Reason American Women to Avoid Medical Care

Women avoiding doctor visits due to health costsWe recently featured an article that highlighted how vital it is for postmenopausal women to schedule yearly gynecological exams. Today, though, The Huffington Post is reporting that an alarming number of women may be skipping out on essential medical care due to the rising cost of healthcare. This makes us wonder if the lower incidence of women seeking gynecologic exams has less to do with the false belief that postmenopausal women do not need this type of care, but more about excessive cost?

According to a study cited in The Huffington Post, a 2010 review by the Commonwealth Fund found that 43% of  American women between the ages of 19 – 64 avoided visiting the doctor or obtaining prescription medications due to cost. This figure ranked the United States as the country with the highest percentage of women who avoid medical care because of healthcare related expenses compared to 11 other countries included in the survey. Why is this number so high?

The non-insured make up a portion of these findings. Young women are not the only demographic of people who are uninsured. Unstable employment can contribute the lack of insurance coverage. While there are personal plans available to cover individuals not currently at a company where insurance is offered, the costs for these personal plans often exceed a person’s medical budget. In addition, for those who cannot afford insurance even clinics that offer sliding scale payment options can be costly for individuals who need continual care beyond the initial office visit for a pelvic exam or even the common cold.

Insured women find themselves tackling obstacles, too. The majority of postmenopausal women are still active members of the workforce with many productive working years ahead of them. While the companies that these women work for may offer health coverage, depending on the annual deductibles, HMO copays and ridiculous review processes for various health screenings getting the proper medical care quickly, and at a low cost, can be time-consuming and stressful. These two obstacles alone can cause women to avoid scheduling regular examinations.

Some will argue that healthcare reform will cure the gap between those who receive regular medical and those who cannot afford to do so. But available health insurance may not be the complete answer to encouraging women to continue receiving medical care past the perimenopausal years. Convenience, less waiting room time and doctors who are compassionate and knowledgeable of postmenopausal symptoms and concerns are factors that play into a woman’s decision if she will schedule that appointment. Too often the hassle does not support the benefits.

No matter the reason for hesitation in scheduling regular annual exams, proper medical care and prevention is essential to a health population of America women whether they are 19 or 84.

Have you avoided going to the doctor due to cost?

The Great Art Of Gift-Giving

How to pick the best giftsFrom tiny to terrific, from weird to wonderful; from standard to spectacular, from one to a bagful- gifts are, have been and will always be the perfect way to say you care! Be it a birthday, a bar mitzvah or even just a beautiful afternoon with your best friend, there nothing that celebrates someone special like a gift that makes their heart smile. With the world getting richer and shopping being a breeze, people win a number of gifts on their day. So if you want to make an impression, or just get something unique, you need to really think about what you are gifting and who you are gifting to.

The biggest paradox of gifts: ‘I know what I have given you, but I do not know what you have received’. Literally translated, one can’t really know how someone is going to receive the gift you get them. To make sure they love it, you must put in some extra effort and keep in mind a few useful tricks.

  1. Know your audience Everyone is not you. You may think the latest Fat-Boy-Slim album is the most fabulous thing on the market, but what would your ‘straight-A’ sister do with it! The first rule while shopping for a present is to step into the receiver’s shoes, so you can figure out what they would appreciate. To do this, you must…
  2. Read between the lines If you actually keep an ear out, you will be surprised at how much people reveal about themselves. File these little pointers in the back of your mind for later use. Imagine the thrill your friend will get when you actually remember a flippant desire she had expressed months back, and gift it to her. Make it a point to randomly write down things you observe about your pals, so you can conceptualize a gift that she really needs. It is this attention to detail that actually brings personality and character to your gift. Also..
  3. The best gifts are not always the most expensive ones Once you’ve got a general idea what you want to gift your family member, friend or co-worker, constantly be on the lookout for something perfect. You will be surprised when inspiration strikes. Gifts bought at the last minute, always turn out to be cliché. So be prepared well in advance. It is not the money you spend on a gift that matters, but the personal attention you put into it. Ok, not like we girls are ever going to say no to diamonds or pearls, but a favorite book, a photo-album or even a special bracelet, will be treasured just as much. When you want to be remembered…
  4. Be different Jewelry, clothes, candles, wine, cutlery etc are standard gift items. Don’t get me wrong, they always work, but to make it special add a little something that represents you. My favorite way to accessorize a gift is by personalizing it. Whether you add an engraved quote to a watch or spoon, or get the lucky gal’s photo imprinted on her apron, diary or handbag, you will be making the gift one-of-a-kind! Last but not the least…
  5. It doesn’t have to be a ‘Thing’! You don’t always have to buy or make a present. You could do something wonderful for them, like throw a fabulous surprise party, babysit her kids for a day so she can go to a romantic spa with her hubby, or even sign her up for a dance class she’s been yearning to do! If you really can’t think of anything, a hug is a great gift- one size fits all, and it’s easy to exchange!!
