Dark Under Eye Circles: Causes and Treatments

correcting dark circles under eyesDark under eye circles are something that every woman has experienced at one point or another. Maybe you partied too late or were up all night with a sick child or work deadline. You can try to cover them up with concealer, but this tends to look cakey and even worse than the dark circles themselves. It is important to know what causes these because then you can treat them correctly because the cause will ultimately determine the treatment.

What Causes Dark Circles Under the Eyes?

The bad news will come first. Sometimes darkness under the eyes is something inherited and this means that they are going to be a little harder to deal with, but you can still minimize their appearance so don’t give up hope yet. You could have excess pigment, have them due to aging or you chronically do not get good sleep. Remember that good sleep is different than enough sleep. You could be in bed for eight hours, but if you are tossing and turning and waking frequently, then your sleep quality is not good.

What can I do About Dark Circles?

There is makeup, but like was said above you do not want to cake concealer onto them. When you use concealer, be sure to choose one that matches your skin ton exactly. A liquid will work well for mild dark circles, but for more severe darkness, go with a cream. Start at the inner corner of your eye and pat on concealer out to just beyond the outer corner of your eye. Then, you want to use a cosmetic sponge to blend your concealer well so that it does not look like you have makeup on, but your dark circles are not as noticeable. This can take some practice so do not give up if you do not do well the first time.

Caffeine is a good way to awaken the body and the eyes. A day cream for your eyes that contains caffeine can help to constrict the blood vessels under that area of your skin. This can help to slightly lighten up the area under your eyes. You can also wear a night eye cream that is moisturizing to help with dark circles.

Remember that the sun increases pigmentation. Many people do not think about how the sun increases the pigmentation of the area under their eyes. When you choose a daytime eye cream, go for one that not only has caffeine, but also has a minimum of an SPF 30. This will help in preventing the sun from worsening the darkness of your under eye circles.

A few other options include treatments that can be done by a dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. These are not cheap, but they are often effective. There is a treatment known as intense pulse light therapy, or IPL therapy. This smooths the skin and destroys pigment cells. Without pigment cells, you will not have pigment, therefore, lighting the area under your eyes. Now, you will generally need at least four sessions to see noticeable improvement.

Easy Do-it-Yourself Face Masks for Oily Skin

The worst part of having an oily skin is the visible shine and acne. Although, hormonal changes is attributed to be the major cause for acne and breakout, the natural oil secreted from the pores and the overall greasiness does attract dirt and grime leading to the spread of bacterial infection.

On the flip side, people with an oily skin type show signs of aging much late in life. Here are some easy do-it-yourself face masks that work wonders for this skin type:

Fuller’s Earth

fuller's earth
Things you need:

  • 2 tablespoon Fuller’s earth powder
  • ½ teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 4 tablespoon Rose water

This is by far the absolute best face pack for oily skin. Fuller’s earth soaks up the excess oil along with deeply embedded dirt.

The idea here is to make a consistent paste and not one that is very runny. Keep an eye on the amount of rose water you put and add 1 tablespoon at a time. Mix well and apply all over your face and neck, let it stay on till it completely dries out and then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Apple, Honey and Lemon Face Pack

Apple mask
Things you need:

  • A medium-sized apple
  • ½ teaspoon of lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon honey

Peel and mash the apple to a pulp and add lemon juice and honey to make a paste. Apply the paste all over and rinse after 20 minutes.

Apple soaks up the excess oil from the face to give a fresh non-oily look, while lemon helps to lighten blemishes and improve complexion. Honey naturally conditions and hydrates skin  without making it look greasy.

Gram flour and Rose Water

gram flour
Things you need:

  • 1 tablespoon gram flour
  • 3 tablespoon rose water/Milk

Mix the ingredients to make a paste and apply all over. Wait till the paste hardens and then gently scrub off. Gram flour tends to stick to your skin and pull off excess oil and dirt from within the pores. Rose water is a natural toner and helps to reduce uneven skin tone, if you are allergic to rose water or if you find that it stings your skin, use milk instead.

Cucumber and Milk Powder

Cucumber face mask

Things you need:

  • A medium sized cucumber
  • 2 teaspoon milk powder
  • 1 egg white
  • A few drops of lemon.

Peel and mash the cucumber to a pulp, now add all the remaining ingredients to make a paste. If you feel the consistence is too thick, add a few drops of water. The paste should neither be too thick nor too runny and should be easy to apply.

Milk powder is generally preferred over liquid milk because one, it doesn’t become too runny on mixing with cucumber juice and two it does not make your face greasy. In case of the gram flour pack, milk was recommended as gram flour tends to pull out the water content from the skin and milk helps to hydrate skin.

Rose water ice cubes

Put rose water in an ice tray and chill to form cubes. Rose water cubes are excellent if you want to reduce open pores.

Top Halloween Costume Ideas

With Halloween just round the corner, you’re probably looking for that one perfect costume that will make you the talk of social media. With a little luck, you might just feature in one of those daily humor websites (hopefully not with an epic fail hash tag).

Decide whether you want to be sweet, raunchy or downright scary. Apart from the costume your makeup plays a huge part, so be sure to get that right.

Bride of Frankenstein

This is a safe and timeless costume and with the right makeup, this definitely would scare a toddler off.

Zombies

This is a pretty common costume idea now, thanks to Zombie Apocalypse. Try to bring in variations I came across a picture a few days back, the entire look of which depended upon the right makeup rather than the costume. Makeup really does play an important part, here’s one of the best zombie makeup tutorial videos I found on Youtube, she really does put in a lot of effort and the look is very detailed and yes gruesome!

Superheroes

2012 is the year of superheroes and seriously you are spoilt for choice here. Whether you went to dress up as Hulk, Thor or the Incredibles it is your call.
Hulk halloween costumes

While we are at superhero costumes, there is one super villain (and he is way hotter) costume that you just can’t resist. Honestly, I love how this girl has managed to pull this off better than most guys!

Fairies and Princesses

Want to look like you have just stepped out of a Disney movie? Try out the traditional Tinkerbelle costume or maybe the little mermaid, albeit with a touch of contemporary. If you are worried about carrying off a fairy dress being a grown up, then just add your own little touch whether in the form of makeup or how about doing a good fairy gone bad?

Kinky

There’s no beating the old school nurse’s uniform if you want to raise the oomph through the roof on Halloween. That is your safest bet, for a different look try Catwoman, a female Spanish pirate, genie, wonder woman or a bunny costume.

Abstract

Why not dress up as a hamburger or a Wrigley’s gum? Would dressing up in an iPod or Facebook costume make you look more social media savy? I saw a woman dress up as spaghetti and meatballs, now I understand that might be her favorite dish but must she be so blatantly obvious about it. Get creative yes but don’t be stupid.

Kids

It’s trick or treat time for them and kids dressed up in Halloween costumes look so adorable!
This cute little thing looks delicious in his Starbuck costume tagging along a menu card.

Free puppies anyone? This is a very creative costume idea and if you do have a pet (preferably a puppy) you can make it a part of the costume.

How to Wear a Short Suit

If you have been following the Fashion Weeks, you would have noticed that most Spring collection bore a considerable touch of short suits. Even celebrities like Nicole Scherzinger and Michelle Williams were seen looking like a million bucks in one of these.

Pairing up a blazer with shorts is a relatively new trend and if you are confused on how to sport these, here are a few tips to help you rock a short suit:

Take your body shape into consideration

rock a short suit
Not just your size, but your shape should also be taken into account while selecting clothes. Some women are top heavy while others have a problematic lower portion, if you are on the heavier side then look for slim fitting short suits. Your shorts and blazer both should be snug fitting, try to avoid flairs as that would just add volume.

Mix and Match

I love Nicole’s look in this picture. Although her shorts are more like hot pants but then she’s absolutely rocked the look, if you are going for a monotone color then put on a printed vest or shirt underneath.

Color Blocking

Experiment with colors and opt for two contrasting shades for the blazer and shorts. Yellow with blue or magenta with parrot green is a great option especially for Spring. New York Fashion Week saw a significant collection of color blocking with loud vibrant contrasting colors merging perfectly to give a chick appeal.

Accessorize Well

They literally save the day. If you are planning to wear a matching blazer and shorts in the same color, make sure you wear some contrasting accessories. A shimmery clutch or an altogether different color pair of lace up boots will perfectly do the trick if you are considering stepping out in the Spring sun.

Beyonce’s complements her all-yellow short suit well with a black and white patterned clutch, shades and sandals. I believe black ankle length boots or red stilettos would have upped the ante considerably.

Play with patterns

Experiment a lot to see which style suits you best. Team up printed shorts with a black blazer or go for an overall printed outfit. You need not buy a separate short suit altogether, be resourceful, raid your wardrobe and pair your old printed or plain shorts with a suitable blazer.

Patterns are a huge hit when it comes to short suits from symmetrical to abstract, patterned short suits complement every body type. Go for stripes if you are top heavy as stripes help to camouflage flab or if you want to hide your tummy, try black blazer on stripes t shirt and printed shorts.

Wax and Polish those legs

Seriously, you’d be trotting around in shorts and nothing makes a short suit look sexier than well-maintained and polished legs. They just add to the entire oomph quotient. Fix a salon appointment and give your legs some much deserved love and pampering even before you go shopping for short suits.
And yes: Suit up! (I just couldn’t resist using this phrase!)

So tell us, would you be sporting a short suit come Spring 2013?

10 Ways to Treat Acne Scars Naturally

naturally treat acneWhoever said acne was the worst thing possible, probably did not suffer from acne scarring. The reddish spots left behind can be a real nightmare for most of us.

Here are 10 ways to naturally treat acne scarring using ingredients that you can find in your kitchen or the nearest supermarket.

  • Applying a few drops of lemon juice on the desired area is one of the best known methods to lighten acne scars. Lemon has natural bleaching properties and hence can lighten scars and pigmentations easily.
  • Similarly, rubbing the pulp of a tomato too helps in reducing acne scars and minimizes pores. Remember that it is only the pulp that is effective and not the entire tomato.
  • Aspirin is a wonder drug for not just migraine but also acne. Crush two aspirin tablets and slowly add droplets of water to make a paste, be careful as adding excess water can make the paste runny and render it useless. Apply this paste all over your acne scars to get rid of both fresh acne and acne scarring.
  • Papaya, like tomato is rich in anti oxidants and can help to get rid of uneven skin tone, pigmentation and acne scars. Just rub a slice all over your face for 15 minutes and then let the juice stay on for another 5 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.
  • Neem leaves were used by ancient Indians in numerous skin healing and beautifying face packs. Crush a few neem leaves and apply the extracts directly on the desired area. If you can’t get hold of neem leaves, look out for neem oil that is as effective.
  • Microdermabrasion is a chemical procedure that helps to lighten acne scar. Baking soda helps in garnering almost the same result as a mild microdermabrasion session. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water (keep an eye on the consistency and add a few more droplets of water if needs be) and stir to make a paste. Now apply this paste all over your acne scarring and scrub gently, the baking soda helps in exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin cells and reduce pigmentation.
  • Look for massage oils or lotions that are rich in Vitamin E as Vitamin E helps in lightening scars and imparting a healthy glow to the skin. Natural oils such as Almond oil, Olive oil, Cocoa Butter, flaxseed oil, etc are all rich in Vitamin E and serve as potent ingredients to lighten acne scars.
  • Mix a few drops of lemon with half a teaspoon of fresh cream and apply evenly on your acne scars. Let the paste stay on for 15 minutes and then wipe off with a cotton pad dipped in warm water.

One consideration that needs to be kept in mind is that while treating acne or acne scars naturally, you need to be patient and persistent. This is not a quick-fix procedure and it would take a few weeks before you start seeing drastic results.

Stainless Steel Jewelry is a High-Style, Cost-Effective Trend in Wedding Bands

Two years ago the unimaginable happened. After a trip to the restroom, I emerged unaware that I had just lost the centerpiece of my bridal set – my solitaire. As I frantically searched the questionable floors of the public restroom, I cursed and threatened my luck. Of course, as I was cursing and threatening, I was also acutely aware that this was probably the universe’s way of giving me what I deserved.

For years I had felt regretful about the choices I made when my then-fiance and I purchased our wedding bands. I wished that I had chosen a different stone cut. I wished I had gone with white gold instead of the traditional yellow gold. I wished that I had chosen a less “suburban” setting, instead choosing something a little off the beaten path. Well, my wishes were granted in the form of a big gaping hole in the middle of my ring.

Strike One, Two and Three!

I thought I could replace it right away since we had the “lifetime guarantee” on our wedding bands. Nope! The lifetime guarantee only applied to the life span of the jewelry company where we had made our purchase. Unfortunately  they died a quick and uneventful retail death shortly after our marriage.

An insurance claim was out of the question. While my solitaire diamond was precious to me, its value was far less than our deductible. Strike two!

Strike three came in the form of the following: TV died and needed to be replaced sooner than the ring. Husband blew out the engine of our Durango and a  new engine had to be built. House payment, food costs and automobile loans needed to be paid in order to sustain a decent standard of living.

The point? Two years later I am still sans solitaire because there have been more important places to spend our money than shelling out a couple thousand dollars buying a replacement diamond.

Then the other day I had an epiphany. I realized that buying “real” wasn’t necessarily the only way to replace my wedding ring. A friend of mine, who is getting married in the spring, was browsing on her tablet the other day when she was over at my house. She showed me a selection of stainless steel men’s wedding bands that she was considering for her soon-to-be husband.

“These rings are a third of the cost of the rings that the jewelry chains are selling,” she gushed. “And, they look great!”

I questioned her about the legitimacy of wearing a ring that wasn’t a desirable material like gold or sterling silver. She told me that her fiance would prefer stainless steel to the other metals because he works with his hands all day and stainless steel is less likely to tarnish or get destroyed.

Hmmm, I thought. Maybe this could work for me?

Stainless Steel Trend Alert

Stainless steel is a hot new  trend in wedding bands. Why? Let me share with you a few thoughts.

  • Stainless steel jewelry resembles silver, but is harder. This means that it will not tarnish and is less likely to scratch or dent.
  • Jewelry made from stainless steel is also hypoallergenic. Silver, and other precious metals, often contain a type of metal called nickel. Nickel can cause allergic reactions in some people.
  • Stainless steel is affordable. You can get a look that is similar to a white gold wedding band for a fraction of the cost.  Add some sparkly cubic zirconium stones to your setting for a glamorous look that costs less.
Rebel Steel

It didn’t take long to sell me on the idea of a stainless steel replacement for my wedding band, especially when I  found this website called Rebel 316. This online retailer sells an unbelievable amount of stainless steel jewelry,  including wedding bands. And the fact that the word rebel is part of the company name makes it all the better.

I am in love, no pun intended, with this stainless steel engagement band. If I pair it up with one of their simple wedding bands the set would look spectacular. What do you think?

Check out these tennis bracelets! I think they are fabulous and I actually need one to replace the tennis bracelet my husband gave me that slipped off my wrist years ago, too. Yes, I am an irresponsible jewelry wearer. I confess!

rebel316

Who knew that there were so many beautiful pieces of jewelry that exist outside of the mall jewelry chains?  Who knew that you could find elegance beyond gold, platinum and silver? So, if you are a bride-to-be consider rebelling against the usual suspects for wedding jewelry and give stainless steel a chance to shine!

Most of us love wearing heel shoes but don’t forget that heels could be bad for your ankles, knees and lower back. Always wear gel insertions and try to keep taking them off in intervals and massage your feet.

5 Do-It-Yourself Face Masks for Dry Skin

Face Masks for Dry SkinDry skin can be a real curse in winter. The low production of natural oil (Sebum) common to this skin type is what makes the skin turn dry, flaky and rough. Here are 5 easy to make natural face masks will help in deeply hydrating and conditioning the skin.

Honey and Lemon Face Pack

Honey and Lemon Face Pack

Things you need

  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

Lemon, being a citrus fruit can naturally bleach skin and is often used to lighten spots, pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Honey deeply conditions the skin by reaching the pores and makes your skin look supple, smoother and also help in minimizing open pores.

Yogurt and Egg White

Yogurt and Egg White facial

Things you need

  • ¼ cup yogurt
  • 2 egg whites

Your skin starts to lose its ability to produce collagen and elastin when you are in your early thirties; this is when the signs of ageing start showing up. Honestly, you should not wait till you’re 30 to start worrying about wrinkles and laugh lines.

Egg whites are known for tightening skin and removing deeply etched dirt particles. However, they tend to make your skin dry and this is why you should always mix it together with yogurt or fresh cream as yogurt hydrates the skin and also works as a toner. Massage the paste on your face for 5 minutes and then let it stay on for another 15 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

If you find the smell too overpowering and pungent, just add half a teaspoon of rose water.

Banana and Honey

Banana and Honey facial

Things you need

  • 1 medium-sized banana mashed
  • 2 tablespoon honey

This is one of the best face packs for dry skin. Banana has rich anti oxidants that help to fight free radicals and make the skin look younger and healthier along with reducing sun tan and blemishes. Both banana and honey hydrates and deeply condition the skin, making the skin instantly glow.

Oatmeal and Fresh Cream
Oatmeal and Fresh Cream

Things you need

  • ½ cup of oatmeal grinded to a powdered form
  • 2 tablespoon fresh cream

This can double up as a facial scrub and pack both. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and apply all over your face and neck. Now gently scrub making small circles on your nose and around the mouth area and bigger ones on your cheeks. Let the paste stay on for 20 minutes and then rinse off.

Onion and Honey

Onion and Honey

Things you need

  • 2 tablespoon onion juice
  • 2 tablespoon honey
  • A few drops of rose water

Now, anything that involves onion is bound to smell bad. Adding rose water to the face pack would take away the smell and also help in hydrating the skin. Mix the ingredients together and apply all over your face and neck, let it stay on for 15 minutes and then rinse off. If you feel any discomfort or if your skin starts to sting, wash the pack off immediately as a lot of people are allergic to onion and their skin might react triggering a rash.

You can also do a patch test by applying a bit of the paste on your elbow first.

How to wear a Jumpsuit Without Looking Like an Idiot

Jumpsuits have made a massive comeback judging by their increased appearances at Fashion weeks, premiers and red carpets. From Marc Jacobs to Ferragamo and J Lo to Vanessa Williams, everyone has been smitten with this 70s piece of clothing, but honestly wearing a jumpsuit does have its drawbacks and no I’m not only talking about the one in the washroom.

Get the right fit-

A jumpsuit is all about getting the right one; identify your flattering and problematic features. For women aiming to make their lower bodies appear slimmer, get a jumpsuit that is tapered at the end and ruffled on top. If you are top heavy, go the opposite way and wear flared bottomed jumpsuits that will take the focus away from your upper body.  I love Beyonce’s look, did the hot mamma rock the look or what!

Beyonce’s jumpsuit style

No hiding the waist-

Why do so many women wear a jumpsuit that makes the waist all but disappear? The one thing that is right with Kim Kardashian’s look is NOTHING. Not only her choice of jumpsuit is nothing short of fashion suicide, her choice of going monotonous with black clutch, black nails (and I’m sure she’s wearing black footwear too) is just so horribly wrong.

Kim Kardashian

Get a jumpsuit that accentuates your curves and strong points and never ever go for various shades of the same color. Love J Lo’s look, the jumpsuit is well-fitting and the white clutch and bangle along with brown shades add a subtle yet stylish touch.

Lennifer Lopez fashion

Dress according to the occasion-

The jumpsuit can be a great casual wear or a show stopping evening outfit. Keep the occasion in mind while choosing the dress and do not forget the right innerwear if you’re opting for anything that is snug and extremely body hugging, get SPANX to avoid unflattering panty lines.

jumpsuits

Accessorize Well-

Accessories can actually save your look even if you are wearing a horrible fitting jumpsuit but that is of course if you get the accessorizing correct. There are four pieces that can jazz up the entire jumpsuit look. A waist belt, no matter if you have thin or a flabby waist a waist belt can always change the look for the better. Chunky bracelets are a day saver and can immediately take the focus away, especially if you are wearing the wrong jumpsuit for your figure.

jumpsuit look

The third accessory is the right neck-piece, if you are top heavy then avoid wearing anything chunky and go with an attention drawing waist belt. The fourth item is the right purse, generally women opt for clutches with a jumpsuit, fair choice here but you can experiment with over-sized handbags too.

To complete the entire look, pick the right pair of footwear. Sandals, pumps and peep toes look good with jumpsuits and ballerinas would complement the look better if you plan to go shorter. Just try to stay away from matching all your accessories with the color of your jumpsuit, now that is a big no-no.

Which celebrity do you think can carry off a jumpsuit best?

5 Tips to get a Makeover on a Budget

frugal makeoversI love makeovers! When I was on a weight loss mission, my final goal reward was a complete makeover and boy was all those sweating out and saying no to junk food, worth it?! The only downside was the price but since I was saving up for close to 2 years for my reward, I didn’t pile up expenses.

Price really is the main consideration for a lot of people considering a makeover. Here are 5 tips to help you get one without burning a hole in your pocket.

Clean up your wardrobe-

We have tons of clothes lying deeper within our wardrobes, cleaning your wardrobe would not only make space for your future purchases, but also prevent you from buying something that you already have. While on your cleaning spree if you find something that you can re-design or wear it differently, save it after all makeovers are not just about new clothes.

Look for existing clothes in your wardrobe and be resourceful, have an old checked shirt? Wear it over a tank top and ripped jeans for an edgier look. Try to change your style rather than getting a change of clothes.

Be frugal-

Go for window shopping and trot on the internet looking for things you want. While you set your heart on some denim cut offs or a pair of pumps, look for alternatives where you can buy the same product and at a cheaper rate. Also, when you are out shopping, ask the salesperson if you can get a discount, I once got a discount of $75 just by asking!

Stock up on basic essentials that never go out of vogue-

There are 5 items in your closet that you can wear at any time of the year and irrespective of the current fashion trend- A well-fitting denim that fits you like a second skin, a white shirt that looks hot on everybody, a little black dress with minimal detailing and which of course flatters all your right points and a basic stole that complements casual, semi-formal and formal look perfectly (just knot it the right way).

Not just about clothes-

A makeover is not symbolic with changing your clothing style, get a hair do or change your regular makeup. A new hairdo is the best way to look different, you can’t change your facial features but you can change your appearance dramatically by experimenting with your tresses. Also, if you are mostly seen with a neutral makeup, jazz things around a bit, experiment with a bold red pair of lips or smoky eyes.

Change your attitude-

No honestly you have no idea the tremendous change you bring in your outer appearance just by feeling happy in your skin. If you lack self-acceptance and self-confidence, you’d feel uncomfortable in some of the biggest labels. Look at yourself in the mirror and appreciate the person you see there, no matter what your weight, height, hair color or skin color is, not really trying to get cheesy but trust me, a change of attitude can change the way people look at you.
